SS7 is an integration of all the telecommunication network and signalling elements needed for effective communication in a telecommunications network. It can be divided into two layers: the physical layer, which consists of the network infrastructures such as the telephone network, cable television networks and IP networks; the data link layer, which consists of the methods and protocols used to integrate telecommunications signals over the physical layer. The signalling aspects of SS7, a protocol referred to as Signalling System No. 7 (SS7), forms the foundation of the Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM), Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE), General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS), Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM), enhanced data rates for GSM evolution (GSM/EDGE), and the High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) networks. History SS7 was developed by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and standards development organizations around the world. It is documented in the publication CCITT Blue Book, Vol 1, CCITT Publication X.1212. The Blue Book was issued in 1974, and contained the original references for the development of SS7. Originally, two versions of SS7 were designed: for fixed, mobile, and other networks for telecommunication network services: signalling, directory, and information services The first version was known as "version 1" of SS7, and was developed by ITU-T. Version 1 was defined in 1974. With the rapid increase in subscriber lines in the mid-1980s, a second version of SS7 was developed, known as version 2. Version 2 was designed to allow the simple integration of the newly installed subscriber line technology and to standardize the methods of managing telephone call processing. Version 3, released in 1986, was developed by ITU-T. Version 3 was the first version of SS7 that was also adopted by CCITT, which had become the relevant standards body for telecommunication network services. Version 3 was also designed to be the basis of the ETSI GSM specification, which was adopted in 1992, and which became the basis of a number of subsequent mobile communication standards, such as the GSM TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) and GSM CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access). The version 3 SS7 standard defines the methods for routing a call, the methods of identification, the methods of authentication, the methods for
